The prayertime.info Chrome extension
The Prayer Times extension shows the next salah and a live countdown in hours, minutes and seconds on your Chrome toolbar, for 49 countries and 264 cities. It is free, it is published by prayertime.info, it keeps working with no internet connection, and it requests no permission to read your browsing history or the pages you visit.
What the extension does
One click on the toolbar icon opens today's full timetable for your city — Fajr, Sunrise, Dhuhr, Asr, Maghrib and Isha — with the current prayer marked NOW and the upcoming one marked NEXT. The countdown to the next adhan ticks every second, and a progress bar shows how much of the interval between the two prayers has already passed.
The toolbar icon itself carries a badge with the hours or minutes remaining, so you can see how long is left to the next salah without opening anything at all.
- Next prayer name, its exact time, and a live countdown in hours, minutes and seconds.
- Today's six times in full, in either 24-hour or 12-hour AM/PM format.
- A badge on the browser toolbar showing the time remaining.
- A searchable country and city picker, with each country's flag.
- Interface in English, Arabic with a full right-to-left layout, and French.
It works without an internet connection
The extension fetches a precomputed 30-day timetable for your city from the free prayertime.info JSON API and caches it locally, which is why it opens instantly rather than waiting on a network request.
It also carries the same astronomical calculation engine the website uses. If the cache is empty and there is no connection, the times are computed on your own machine from the city's latitude, longitude, timezone and calculation method. The extension does not become useless on a plane or in a dead zone, which is the point at which most prayer-time tools stop working.
What it can and cannot see
The extension requests two permissions, storage and alarms. Storage holds your chosen city and the cached timetable on your own device. Alarms is what lets the countdown and the toolbar badge keep updating while the popup is closed.
It asks for no access to your tabs, your browsing history, your bookmarks or the content of any page you visit, so it cannot read them. Its only network access is to prayertime.info itself, to fetch the timetable. Your city choice stays on your device and is never sent anywhere.
This is checkable rather than a promise. Chrome lists every permission an extension holds on its entry in your extensions page, and a store listing cannot hold a permission it has not declared.
How to install it
Open the Chrome Web Store listing and choose Add to Chrome, then confirm. The extension works in Chrome, Edge, Brave, Opera and Vivaldi, because all of them install from the same store. It is built on Manifest V3, which is the current extension platform and the one Chrome will keep supporting.
Browser extensions are a desktop feature. Chrome on Android and on iOS cannot install them, so on a phone the website itself is the right tool — it shows the same countdown and the same timetable and needs nothing installed.
After installing, pin the icon to the toolbar so the countdown badge stays visible, using the puzzle-piece button in the Chrome toolbar.
Countries, cities and calculation methods
The extension ships the same coverage as the website — 49 countries and 264 cities, each with its own coordinates, its own IANA timezone and the calculation convention published by the religious authority for that country, rather than one global default applied everywhere.
That last part is what makes the times match your local mosque instead of being approximately right. Umm al-Qura for Saudi Arabia, the Egyptian General Authority of Survey for Egypt, JAKIM for Malaysia, ISNA for North America, the Muslim World League for the United Kingdom, UOIF for France, Karachi for Pakistan, India and Bangladesh. The same city can differ by up to twenty minutes between conventions, so the convention matters as much as the arithmetic.
The current published version is 1.0.0.
