Sixty days starting today. The highlighted row is today.
Months of the Hijri Year
The Hijri year has twelve lunar months. Each begins with the sighting of a new crescent and runs 29 or 30 days. Four are the sacred months: Dhu al-Qi'dah, Dhu al-Hijjah, Muharram and Rajab.
One important detail: the Islamic day begins at sunset, not at midnight, so the period after the Maghrib adhan already belongs to the next Hijri day. The dates shown here follow the civil convention of starting at midnight, which is what most printed calendars use.
Hijri dates on this page follow the Umm al-Qura calendar published by Umm al-Qura University, Makkah.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the Hijri date today?
Today's Hijri date is 29 Rabi' al-Thani 1448 AH, corresponding to 10 October 2026 in the Gregorian calendar, according to the Umm al-Qura calendar.
Why does the Hijri date differ by a day between countries?
Because the start of a lunar month depends on sighting the crescent moon, which varies with geography and weather. Some countries follow astronomical calculation and others visual sighting, so a one-day difference is common.
How many days are in a Hijri year?
A Hijri year is 354 or 355 days, about eleven days shorter than a Gregorian year. That is why Ramadan falls roughly eleven days earlier each Gregorian year.
Which Hijri month are we in now?
We are currently in Rabi' al-Thani of the year 1448 AH. Today's date is 29 Rabi' al-Thani 1448 AH, corresponding to 10 October 2026.
When does the new Hijri year begin?
The Hijri year opens with Muharram, the first of the twelve months and one of the four sacred months. The first of Muharram is fixed by sighting the crescent, so it can differ by a day between countries.
What are the sacred months?
There are four: Dhu al-Qi'dah, Dhu al-Hijjah, Muharram and Rajab. Three fall consecutively and Rajab stands alone.
Why does Ramadan move earlier each year?
Because the Hijri year is lunar and about eleven days shorter than the solar year, Ramadan and the other Islamic dates shift earlier by that amount annually, cycling through all the seasons over roughly 33 years.
Does the Hijri day start at midnight?
No. The Islamic day begins at sunset, so the hours after the Maghrib adhan already belong to the next Hijri date. The dates shown here follow the civil convention of starting at midnight, which is what printed calendars and official bodies use.
